After Amtrak’s latest round of work to repair and rebuild infrastructure at Penn Station is completed, 14 LIRR rush-hour trains that had been canceled or rerouted will return to Penn Station starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng.
The LIRR has been operating a total of 260 daily rush-hour trains, which were limited by a reduction of track availability resulting from Amtrak’s work. The rush-hour train total will increase to 274 (a 5.4 percent increase) once the 14 trains are restored.
“We’re very pleased that Amtrak expects to conclude their important work over this long weekend, which is right on the timetable they had provided,” said Eng. “This allows us to restore full rush-hour service for our customers this coming Tuesday, as we had promised.”
Five rush hour trains that had been canceled will resume service, six trains that had been rerouted to Atlantic Terminal will return to Penn Station and three trains that had been operating to/from Jamaica will be extended to Penn Station.
Other changes taking effect on Sept. 3 include the one-stop extension of a westbound South Fork Commuter Connection train to Westhampton to meet customer demand. Additionally, four lightly patronized, off-peak trains on the Oyster Bay Branch will be discontinued on weekends.
